Paraty City – Brazil

A preserved relic of Colonial architecture, Paraty city is a historic museum located in a tropical paradise surrounded by beautiful beaches and islands. Even after more than 500 years after it was founded, the city hasn’t changed much; all the buildings have kept their colonial charm, although they have been transformed into “Pousadas” (B&B), shops, bars and restaurants.

The windows and doors of the houses are painted in bright colors with white walls, creating a scenario that contrasts with the red and brown colonial roofs.

The narrow streets, paved with irregular stones, are closed to vehicle traffic in several parts of the city and, in some occasions, the high tide invades some seafront streets creating a Venetian scenery.

The sea that surrounds Paraty is limpid, calm and warm, offering innumerous untouched beaches and small bays with emerald green color and white sand,  perfect for resting, snorkeling and diving. At night, you can catch a band, a capoeira demonstration or even a Carnival rehearsal near the main square.

Candidate for nomination to the World Heritage of  UNESCO, Paraty has recently become a popular tourist destination for foreigners and Brazilian, who come to this city to admire the old houses and visit one of the last reserves of untouched Atlantic Rain Forest. The city is a bit sophisticated in terms of restaurants, with some being quite expensive, but there are also good places for all budgets.
