Rio de Janeiro

Located at the Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, which means River of January, was founded by Portuguese sailors in January 1, 1502. They believed that it was just a big river, so they gave it the name of Rio de Janeiro. But the city became the focus of the tourism industry in Latin America and synonymous of Brazil for many foreign tourists.

Renowned around the world for its natural beauty, vibrant beaches, annual carnival and the two landmarks, the Sugar Loaf and Christ the Redeemer statue, Rio is also a city of contrasts with a colonial architecture reminiscent of the past and the flashy modern buildings providing a vision of the future.

Known as the marvelous city by the locals, Rio has perfect landscapes with rock formations, forest and mountains. Coupled with its history, tropical climate and the contagious joy of its inhabitants, Rio de Janeiro is the type of city that seduces unpretentiously at first sight.

The Botanical Garden is one of the ten most important of its kind in the world, a true ecological and wildlife sanctuary. It was designed by Dom João VI in 1808 and founded by order of the Prince Regent John VI with the purpose of acclimating plants brought from the East Indies, but one of the first plants to arrive was the Palma Mater, one of the three oldest Imperial Garden palms.

The garden has wild birds, a fine collection of Victorian water lilies, several species of flora from different countries, such as the Japanese plants, and the Amazonian tropical species, including 5000 varieties of plants demonstrating the rich botanic diversity of Brazil.

Calm and serene on weekdays the Botanical Garden blooms with families and music on weekends. It is a great place for leisure and to contemplate nature, where plants of artistic, archaeological and historical importance show the diversity of flora and facts related to the history of Rio de Janeiro.
